We just wrapped up our Tenth Annual Feed the Need Basketball Tournament and it was arguably our best one yet. We had a record of 22 teams and 215 participants take part in the two-day event at the Oak Brook Park District. We even had two championship teams representing the Advanced and Community brackets, for the first time ever!
Today, we’re proud to report that the efforts of this event brought in a total of over $63,000.
We cannot thank our contributors and participants enough.
30% of funding this year came as a result of our sponsors’ generosity, 50% came from corporate contributions, 10% from team registrations and another 10% from all other event revenue (food, raffle, auction, and merchandise sales).
This event is so important because it funds nearly a full year of budgets required for our Healthcare without Borders medical facility in Sierra Leone and our Konadu Basic School in Ghana. This year, we will use the funds to increase staff, build more classrooms, sponsor sports programs and upgrade on economic development opportunities at the Konadu School. Additionally, we will continue dispersing funds towards our acute malnutrition program, malaria prevention programs and completion of our brand new healthcare facility and staff quarters in Sierra Leone.
The implementation of both a Community and Advanced bracket this year allowed teams to compete at the level they felt most comfortable, ultimately resulting in a happier and more competitive atmosphere. It required three full courts and a long, demanding schedule, but it worked out due to a hardworking volunteer team. What made the tournament even more special was having the support of long-standing food sponsor Mr. Broast and newcomer, Burgerim located in Oak Brook, IL. Highlights from the event:
- We welcomed two new championship teams
- We were able to raffle off tickets to Walt Disney World
- Nexus Pharmaceuticals was our Platinum Sponsor for the two-day event
- Our winning team packages were sponsored by Roots, each player received cozy hoodies
- Our auction featured a hot sneaker DROP! We had an auction with shoes everyone wanted, sponsored by Kicks USA
- We set a new fundraising record high!
Our winners advanced each round with nail biters leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. Phenomenal teamwork and defense led Team Flight to their first-ever tournament title. The United Nations Basketball Club avenged their loss from the first day to reign as inaugural champions to our first ever Community Bracket.
“All of the blood and sweat from the previous four years makes this finally worth it, and we can’t wait to come back next year to defend the title,” UNBC Captain John Chiamas said.
Every year, we start planning the event and outreach six months prior to the weekend event. There is so much effort put in by various individuals for the implementation of this event. Thank you to our volunteers, scorekeepers and everyone else who stopped by the event to watch, eat and donate. We are grateful for the support we get each and every year and we hope to continue this tradition for many years to come.
